Did you know there are positive neuroscience findings associated with self-affirmation activities and managing mood disorders? When we engage in saying affirmations to ourselves, our brain regions associated with positive valuation become activated and are correlated with reduced stress and improved emotional regulation1. I am always interested in neuroscience, so as an EMDR therapist, I find this topic particularly fascinating. It reminds us that something as small as speaking to ourselves kindly can make a significant difference in our day-to-day ability to understand ourselves and care for ourselves, even during stressful moments.
In my many years as a licensed therapist, I have observed that the struggle to practice self-compassion and consistently affirm oneself is difficult for many people, especially men, who haven’t always been socialized to cultivate a loving inner dialogue. Yet, affirmations are an effective and accessible tool to foster a more rounded (positive) self-image. One of the missions of Muscles, Mind & Heart™️ LLC is to uplift men of color through the eradication of mental health stigma. I believe that the relationship some men, especially fathers, have with themselves would improve if they spoke to themselves with more kindness. This observation stems from my extensive experience as a therapist, working primarily with fathers (and sons). Sometimes it’s challenging to find the language of kindness. But, not to worry, to help you get started, I’ve created this list of 50 Affirmations exclusively for this community. These affirmations are not available anywhere else! I wish you love on your journey to remembering your greatness.
Warmly,
Cheryl Hurst, LCSWR
